Cycling Experience
My child and I recently completed a cycling trip around Qiandao Lake, covering about 150 kilometers. There was a typhoon, and I hesitated whether to give up, but I thought riding in a typhoon would be a more unique experience, so I chose to proceed as planned. On the first day, we set off early at 6 a.m., encountering some wind and rain, but after about three hours, the wind and rain stopped. The second day was a crystal-clear day after the typhoon, with the lake and mountains looking even more beautiful under the blue sky and white clouds.
I had some expectations for the scenic views along the way. Comparatively, the unexpected sights, such as the four-legged lizard crawling on the ground, the wildflowers by the roadside streams, and the occasional eagle circling in the sky, left a more lasting impression.
In the latter part of the journey, my child didn’t want to wait for me and sped ahead with two young cyclists we met on the road, arriving at the destination more than an hour before me. After reuniting, my child said he reached a speed of over 50 kilometers per hour while going downhill, which really startled me. He also mentioned that the two cyclists were very friendly and helped him fix his bike chain that fell off during the downhill ride. The somewhat dangerous high-speed ride and making new, friendly cyclist friends were unique and valuable experiences for my child.
Actually, I am also a passionate cyclist. Whenever I meet fellow cyclists on the road, I always greet them warmly with a “Keep going!” Most of them respond with a kind or enthusiastic smile, and some also cheer me on in return. Feeling the goodwill and enthusiasm of strangers is also a unique and valuable experience, a kind of “spiritual scenery” gained during the trip.
Last year, during the cycling trip around Taihu Lake, the scenery along the way was also delightful. However, the most memorable part was changing a tire midway. In the evening of the second day, the rear tire of my child’s road bike was punctured by a thin wire, forcing us to stop and change the tire. Having never done it before, we used a video call to get remote guidance from the bike rental shop owner. After a long struggle, we managed to change it, but after riding a few dozen meters, the tire went flat again. We had to take the wheel off again and found a small piece of wire still inside the outer tire, which quickly punctured the new inner tube😟. The rental shop owner had actually reminded us to carefully check the outer tire for any debris before changing the inner tube. Learning from this lesson, we meticulously checked the outer tire several times, ensuring no debris remained before putting on the second new inner tube, finally solving the problem. By then, it was completely dark.
The unique experiences during cycling trips may stay in my mind, occasionally coming to mind, bringing a smile to my face.
